These activities accompany the 8th Grade Great Books short story units, but can be used separately as well.
In an intensive 8th grade reading class for kids with behavior issues, I needed to pull high-interest, strong pieces of reading that would capture their interest and move swiftly enough to hold their interest. That is when I happened upon the Great Books lessons and struck gold.
This particular short story is called "Star Food" by Ethan Canin. This resource is a two-page scavenger hunt activity that asks the students to peruse the short story on their second reading and find certain aspects, such as, "5. Find “Dreams are more important than rye bread.” Who says this? _________________ Draw a sketch of Dade and his mom sitting on the roof, star gazing."
