This interactive SMARTboard lesson begins with a mini lesson about what an inference is and steps to take to make a good inference. The lesson also includes direct links to 3 video short clips with high interest content that allow students to discuss what they can infer and why. It encourages students to use their background knowledge, their own schema, and evidence from the text. Last, students then read short passages and discuss what they can infer from the paragraphs. All slides are self checking so the lesson could be used as a teacher directed mini lesson and then it could used in a center or station as an independent activity. I actually think it's best to use as a whole class or small group activity so that it encourages discussion about inferences that can be made and allow students to support their answers. Even though slides are self checking with an answer, there may be more than one answer that works and it gives students a chance to defend their thoughts with text evidence and their own schema. Created with Smart Notebook 11. Great for grades 1-4 depending on the level of the class and how the teacher intends to use it. 1st graders may need more support with the lesson.
