This resource contains BOTH the “Star-Spangled Banner” Election Workstation Resource (in pdf) and a Notebook file (by SMART technologies) so make certain you have this software first before downloading). The pdf and Notebook file are basically the same - it just provides you with a choice of which type of file you find easiest to use. *Added 9-16-1: A PowerPoint version (converted from the Notebook file).

Students get to vote whether or not to keep the "Star-Spangled Banner" as our national anthem based on criteria they come up with regarding what makes a song patriotic, if it's catchy, how easy it is to sing, etc. At the end of the lesson they have the chance to "elect" another patriotic song that might be a better choice for a national anthem.
I use this as a station to a "Star-Spangled Banner" unit. Students look at the lyrics (can sing, and listen to recordings of them via links to YouTube) of five different patriotic songs.
Included are the lyrics and YouTube links to: "America (My Country 'Tis of Thee), "America the Beautiful," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "God Bless America," and "Grand Old Flag," as well as a brief look the historical impact of each. The "Star-Spangled Banner" is also included.
A worksheet is provided that can be used while groups are working at the station. An exit ticket, which allows the students to "elect" a new national anthem (as well as provide a reason as to why they chose the song), is also attached to this resource.
This file is in PDF form.
***Added 8-7-15: An editable exit ticket for you.
