Spectroscopy is how we know what makes up stars. This lab is awesome connecting students to how star science works. It is appropriate to make spectroscopy real in chemistry class, physics, astronomy, and general science about the electromagnetic spectrum. My students love this lab and really understand how we can figure out what elements make up far away substances because of this applied science!
You do need a light box, gas tubes, and at least one spectroscope. The preview file has all the materials for you. I also provided a picture as a thumbnail to give you an idea of the setup. My current school only has 1 light box and 2 spectroscopes and we were able to do 2 gases a day during a 55 minute period. A longer class or more light boxes would make it go quicker. I've done it at another school with 6 lightboxes and unlimited spectroscopes. It takes less time, but at least several class periods to do the lab and answer the analysis questions.
