“Star Student Writing” is a simple yet engaging way to kick-start your class’s writing routines and to motivate your kids towards fuller, richer, more detailed sentences & paragraphs.
The “Star Student Writing” routine begins with a “star student” being interviewed. Key details are collected onto an easy-to-follow graphic organizer. Classmates then begin writing and illustrating about the “star” using the key details they’ve just learned.
While classmates are writing, the “Star Student” meanwhile uses the same graphic organizer to write & illustrate a cover page all about him/herself.
Star Student Writing makes a great supplement to your classroom’s existing writing routines & instruction. It’s a fun and interactive way to model basic conventions of writing, reinforce sight words, encourage sentence variety & descriptive words, bolster writers’ confidence and will get even the most reluctant writers to write!
At the end of each “Star Student Writing” task, I collect all of the pages and bind them into a book, which becomes a treasured keepsake for that student to take home and share (or to display during Open House).
