Function machines, or Input and Output Boxes, are an important concept for students. They require algebraic thinking and problem solving skills. I designed this activity pack for my students to use during math centers. They can use one character’s boards and matching “function” cards to practice this skill. The boards and cards get progressively harder so you can easily differentiate for your students.
I use these boards and cards by photocopying the boards for the students so they can write on them, and laminating the cards so I can use them every year. You can also laminate the boards and cards and use them with wipe off markers.
I also included “Guess My Rule” and “Make a Rule” pages that can be used as a whole group “Math Talk”, a small group challenge, or an additional challenge for fast finishers.
