Janet Halfmann brilliantly tells the story of an Ochre Sea Star in the Star of the
Sea, A Day in the Life of a Starfish. This would be a perfect “mentor” book to
show how many facts you can learn about a “favorite” sea creature by telling
about it in one day. If students are learning/researching about other sea
creatures, they can take the facts and make their own books. The vivid
illustrations in this book will inspire students to add their own vivid illustrations in
their own books.
My Guided Reading Packet allows students to collect the interesting facts about
the Starfish, without reading a textbook. There are a few visual images the
students can draw to show the setting of the starfish, and Post Reading Activities
that will help synthesize their knowledge.
