PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Course: Calculus, Pre-calculus, College Algebra
Objective: Create a function and find its maximum value. For a calculus class, this would fall in the optimization section--for algebra or pre-calc, it could be used when discussing maximum and minimum values; instead of using the derivative, students could graph to find a max.
Other needs: Starbursts, scissors, rulers, tape

This hands-on activity asks students to construct an open-top box out of a given rectangle. They'll have to determine a function that represents the volume of their particular box and eventually look to optimize the volume. The activity works best if students are in pairs.

Included are 4 different sized rectangles for printing.
