I looked for hours to find a lesson on Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night using the grid method. I was able to find "coloring activity" murals in many locations, but nothing that taught students how to actually draw a part of this masterpiece! So I decided to make one myself.
I started by dividing the original work into 24 even pieces, because most classes have about 24 students. If you have more or less, double up, or have two students who are not quite as interested work together. The grid is measured to exactly 8" x 8", with thin red lines every two inches for guidelines. The finished "mural" or "collaborative piece" is 32" x 48". My school will be proudly displaying our student's work in the cafeteria for all to see!
There are 25 pages in this document. Each piece is in on its own page, with the grid and high resolution pieces properly lined up. Each page is labeled with row and column information so there is no confusion. This can be printed out from your printer at home. The last page has a blank 8" x 8" grid. I used mine to help the students with practicing the grid drawing method, and with helping them make their own grid on their final paper (We used tick marks around our paper, not complete lines, so there was no erasing).
I hope you enjoy this project as much as I have!! Please follow me and share your classes successes in the comments, I would love to here from you and see your finished work :)
