Starry Safari by Linda Ashman
My Kindergarteners love this book. They are always surprised, the first time we read it, that the main character was not actually on a safari in Africa, but only imagining it - which gives you an excellent way to discuss using your imagination. I did discover that many of them did not know many of the African animals, so I brought up pictures of them on the Promethean board. I did discover a wonderful website that has recorded sounds from Africa. One of the recordings was at night and had almost all of the animals in the story, so we sat back, closed our eyes, and imagined ourselves on safari, and listened to the noises of the night. They loved it.
I teach the song first, then we sing the song on each page turn as we read the book.
