Phonics Boxes are activities formatted for the boxes available at Michaels that contain 16 smaller boxes. These activities can also be stored in 6x9 brown envelopes or any other way you would like to store them. Each “box” contains a sound or syllable sort and a flashcard activity/game. The cards can also be used just as flashcards and, if laminated, you can have your students use dry erase markers to highlight phonic concepts (such as vowels, digraphs, blends, etc.) There is a title card for the front of the box or envelope and directions. I use double-sided tape to adhere them.
Word Sort: Print, laminate, and cut out the header cards and the word cards. Students take turns sorting them by the spelling needed to complete the word.
“Stars” – Print, laminate, and cut out the star word cards and the spoiler cards. Students take turns drawing a card and reading the word. If read correctly, the student gets points by the number of stars on the card and play passes to next student. If they get a spoiler card (Lost Backpack) they have to give back the number of stars indicated on the card. The student with the most stars (points) at the end of the game is the winner!
