This assignment uses text and data representations to teach students about star classification. The intro text gives students a brief overview of how stars form and why they aren't all the same. The "Spectral Class Characteristics" table outlines the naming conventions of spectral classes and their differences. The "Star Spectral Analysis Data" is a complex data presentation with five variables combined into one chart that can later be used to predict some characteristics of stars based on other observable quantities.
The first questions at the end push students to reorganize this complex data set by creating smaller data representations. This helps students see the advantages and disadvantages of using very complex data presentations. (See free download for HAULT details)
The final questions push students to use this data to answer comprehension questions about star classification.
