Students use this sheet to examine the beginnings of several books they randomly select, and then examine the technique the author used to start their piece of fiction. The teacher should discuss what each type of beginning looks like and involves. This sheet should be completed by each student on different novels, and then the class can engage in a cooperative activity to compare what they have discovered. Students then try several different beginnings for their own narrative. They can they have peers determine which beginning they "like" the best, and students can then revise their beginnings based on this feedback.
