This is a GREAT project for grades 4-6 that incorporates student research, technology, and public speaking! Each student will choose (or you assign) a state to research, complete a research booklet, and create a technology-based presentation (using a teacher-approved presentation software program) to present to the class. The purpose is for students to fine-tune their research skills, learn to identify reliable sources, create a unique slideshow presentation, improve their public speaking skills, and, of course, learn more about the United States in the process! Modify the project to meet the needs of your students.
The pages are intended to guide students through the research process. (It would be a good idea to take this opportunity to talk to students about identifying reliable sources.) You can even provide them with a specific list of websites to use. Remind the students, as they locate and record their research findings, to fill out the “Works Cited” page at the end of the research packet. This will help students learn about source citations for their future research papers and projects.
Depending on the age/grade-level of the students and computer availability, you can determine whether to simply have students complete the research portion of the project and make a booklet with the pages (maybe make a creative book cover) or move forward with the slideshow and oral presentation. A list of 50 states is attached so students may choose or you can conduct a “blind draw.”
