In a physical change a new substance is not formed. Students often believe that when water freezes it expands so the water has an increase in mass. I use this Science experiment to show my students that when water changes from one state to another, it is a physical change. No new matter is formed. Students find and record the mass of a water balloon in its liquid form. Then they create a temperature change by placing the balloon in the freezer overnight. The next day, they will see the water is now in a solid form. By finding the mass of the solid water balloon they will discover the mass stated the same. Lab sheet uses the Scientific Method. Lab sheets can also be cut in half to fit into Interactive Notebooks if desired.
