This graphic organizer is designed to aid students in analyzing the presidential State of the Union address.
It features a three column layout for students to take notes on five topics presented in the speech. For each topic, there is space for students to jot down the main idea or main points presented and a column to note various persuasive strategies or rhetorical devices being used. There are also two evaluation questions at the end for students to reflect on the effectiveness of the arguments they studied.
The persuasive strategies or rhetorical featured in this graphic organizer are:
• Appeal to Emotions
• Appeal to Trust
• Appeal to Authority
• Appeal to Reason
• Plain Folks
• Rhetorical Question
This handout is not specific to any one president and can be used for any State of the Union address. It could also be used to analyze any lengthy speech.
I have provided the handout in MS Word, PDF, and link to a Google Doc version as well.
