Students will watch the documentary “Before the Flood” and take notes or fill out a worksheet which introduces them to this Human Impact Project.
In groups of 3-4, students will work on a poster project. In the movie “Before the Flood,” Leonardo DiCaprio talks about a painting “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Hieronymus Bosch. This painting has three panels: 1st panel is the Garden of Eden; 2nd panel is “human kind before the flood;” and the 3rd panel is the decayed; burnt landscape. You will create your own image of the world before the desolation of man (a natural environment), during the extravagant living of man (the time of modern man), and then the burnt, decayed remains.
In groups, students choose a specific area (Amazon rainforest; Hawaiian beaches; Miami, FL; Dubai, UAE, etc.) Divide the poster into three parts, draw the three images, and label each part. For each section you will write one and a half to two pages describing the state of the image (12pt, Times New Roman font, standard margins).
While this is a group project, the project will be divided between group members and students will be graded individually.
The project is completely editable with an adjustable rubric for individual grading.
