PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Statehood: The Missouri Compromise of 1820

“Statehood: The Missouri Compromise of 1820” is a Social Studies lesson I created to help my 4th grade students understand the issues surrounding how Missouri became a state in 1821. Since I teach in Missouri, the primary focus of this lesson is how the Missouri Compromise of 1820 led to statehood for the Show-Me State. The original informational text included in this lesson provides a summary of how Missouri became a state starting with its existence as a territory, the balance of power between free states and slave states in 1819, the details of the Missouri Compromise of 1820, and the early foundations of government for the state of Missouri.

Included in this product:
• Detailed 5-page lesson outline (PREVIEW)
• “I Can” Learning Goal Chart
• Essential Question Chart
• Vocabulary Poster – Missouri Compromise
• Vocabulary Lesson Outline
• Content-rich Informational Text (Lexile measure 1020L)
• Teacher’s Guide for the Informational Text
• Cloze (scaffolded) Notes for informational text with answer key
• 3D Graphic Organizer (foldable)
• Constructed-response writing prompt and scoring guide

Suggestions for how to use the activities in this lesson with an interactive notebook are also included. The 3D graphic organizer will fit within the pages of a standard composition notebook. However, the lesson is designed so that it can also be used without such notebooks.
