Save money by purchasing these three States of Matter resources together!
This Bundle has four hands-on 5 E inquiry based labs. Students will learn that applying heat and cold can change water from one state to another. Students will also learn about the characteristics of each state of matter including volume, shape, rigidness and molecule arrangement. This resource focuses on basic science concepts of three main states of matter, and how adding heat or cold to them can change them into another state of matter. This resource also looks at properties of each state of matter (gas has an unfixed shape and takes on the shape of the container.) Students will also learn that some changes caused by heat and cold can be reversed and some cannot.
Science Concepts in this Resource:
Solids have a fixed volume and shape
Liquids take on the shape of the container
Gas takes on the shape and volume of the container
Molecules in solids are close together and vibrate slightly
Molecules in liquid move around and are farther apart
Molecules in gas sip around quickly are ar spread out
States can be changed by adding heat or cold
Some changes caused by heat can be reversed and others cannot.
This resource includes flaps and folds for interactive notebooks, a nonfiction article, a quiz response pages and a lab. This resource also includes sorting cards that can be used for center time of for fast finishers.
This resource is designed to meet the NGSS standards for 2nd grade:
2-PS1-3. Make observations to construct an evidence-based account of how an object made of a small set of pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object.
2-PS1-4. Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot.
The hands-on lessons use simple household materials. Students will learn through these activities that some some changes caused by heating and cooling can be reversed and some cannot.
Science and Engineering Practices Used by Students:
Asking questions (for science)
Planning and carrying out investigations
Analyzing and interpreting data
Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering)
Engaging in argument from evidence
Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
This resource includes:
States of Matter Lessons NGSS
States of Matter Stability and Change
States of Matter Sorting Cards
THIS RESOURCE ONLY ADDRESSES STATES OF MATTER IT DOES NOT ADDRESS THE OTHER 2ND GRADE STANDARDS FOR STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER. IF YOU WANT SOMETHING THAT MEETS THOSE STANDARDS LOOK AT THIS RESOURCE Sorting Cards for Properties of Matter
