Students will measure the temperature of a beaker of liquid as a piece of dry ice is placed in the liquid. There is a very aggressive change in temperature and students really like the dramatic change they can observe. After collecting their data, students will create a graph showing the temperature over time and answer a number of discussion questions.
Supplies needed: Piece of dry ice (available at most grocery stores), 1 container of juice per 50 students (juice has a more interesting reaction and gives more for students to observe compared to water), 1 beaker per group, 1 thermometer per group
Very cool lab! The students really enjoy doing this (just make sure they're wearing goggles and gloves while handling the dry ice).
