This 8-page document includes a 6-page student experiment packet and an answer key. In this investigation, students charge a balloon with static electricity and test a variety of materials to see which sticks to the balloon best. It is designed for student pairs. (I found it extremely helpful to have pairs pre-assigned!) I like to use packets like this for experiments because all the information is in one place for the students.
The packet includes:
-Background information about static electricity
-Safety notes (No major concerns for this investigation)
-A list of materials
-A place for recording predictions
-A table for recording data
To perform this investigation, each student pair will need:
-A copy of the packet and a pencil for each student
-A sharpie marker
-A paper plate
-A pair of scissors
-A small piece of aluminum foil
-A small piece of Christmas Tree tinsel
-A small piece of construction paper
-A small piece of notebook paper (a scrap is fine)
-Three paper clips
When I count time time to go over and explain the packet, distribute materials, form student pairs, and actually perform the investigation, I found it took between ninety minutes and two hours.
