A new way to monitor student accountability during independent reading time.
Long gone are the days of the dreaded reading log. I used to give my student a reading log to complete weekly. It was to be signed by parents and turned in on Friday. Most of the time, these logs ended up in the recycling bin.
In my class I am going to dedicate a certain amount of time each period to independent reading. While students are reading, I will “check in” with each of them. Students will tell me the title of the book they are reading and what page they are on. I will also record if a student finishes his or her book (F) or “if the book is abandoned (A)the book. Each student has their own data sheet that I use to record the information. I have seen similar data collections done using a calendar, but I find that my brain likes using a table.
