Concepts covered in this lesson & activity include:
Diversity- we are all different, yet we have similarities
Tolerance- Acceptance of differences and how differences make us stronger and unique
Peer Pressure- Wanting to fit in with the group
Ways we show respect for others
Respect and tolerance are important components of character education. Stellaluna is an amazing story that teaches a wonderful lesson of tolerance and pride in diversity. One of the video links is of Pamela Reed reading the book aloud. She does a super job!
This presentation has 19 slides and includes links to 4 different videos to help make your points. I have included comprehension questions to help clarify the points of acceptance and tolerance as well as pride in ones' own uniqueness. I have included a link to a page that shows you how to create an activity of the students making their own "Stellaluna" bat. It is super cute.
Also, there is a page that contains other excellent resources for more teaching options and activities that can be utilized. This is a great story to do a cross-curricular study including many different subjects. As a counselor, this would be fun to use to collaborate with teachers to work together on a big unit on bats.
Videos are NOT embedded. They are links. If you run across broken links, please notify me so that I can update and correct them. When you are using technology, sometimes things happen, and I want to make sure you get the best possible product I can supply for you.
I would schedule 30-45 minutes for this lesson and activity.
The PowerPoint is customizable and includes comprehension questions to support you in your lesson. The presentation includes both animations and transitions to hold your students' interest. Make your lesson come alive for your students and help them to connect to the concept in a fun way that will help them to remember the important lessons you need for them to remember.
