Product Description
These activities were designed to be used as a low prep option for work stations during the guided reading block. Tasks are simple, engaging, and designed with review of skills previously taught in mind. These activities were intended for use in word work and work on writing:

Word Work
Poem…duplicate enough copies for each student in your class to add to their poetry journal. The words in the poem are repetitive to build reading fluency. Students also have the opportunity to practice reading sight words, practice syllabication patterns, identify adverbs and visualize in order to illustrate the poem in their journals. (TEK 1.8A, 1.20Aiv)

Adverbs….Print, laminate and cut apart for durability. Students will read simple sentences to identify adverbs that tell time in context. After completing the puzzles, students can create a mini-book by recording their choice of matching sentences neatly, then illustrate the sentence in the boxes. Each 8 ½ x 11 page is formatted with copies for 2 students in mind. After copying, cut the pages in half across the dotted line. There is also a mini-poster provided. Consider using this activity in a large pocket chart. Hang the mini-poster as a header for the activity. (TEK 1.20Aiv)

Open Syllables….Print, laminate and cut apart. Students will build word attack skills by reading sentences to practice identifying “chunks” of words containing open syllables to decode words. After reading sentences, students will choose two to record neatly and illustrate. The ‘I Can’ statement contains a reminder poster of the rules for open syllables for students to use as a guide. (TEK 1.3Cii, H)

ABC Order….Print, cut apart and laminate for durability. Students will read and sort words by category, then place in ABC order to the second letter.. There is a recording sheet provided. (TEK 1.6E)

Work on Writing
Creative Writing… Students will write to create a list of things they would like to do over the summer. (TEK 1.19A)

Adjectives Review….Print, laminate and cut apart. Students will use the mini-poster as an aid to write to describe their favorite type of ice cream. (TEK 1.20Aiii, 1.20B, )

Sight Word. Fix-UP…Print & copy. Students will follow directions to work with specific sight words. (TEK 1.3H)
