Division can be tricky work for elementary school students. I created these steps to help guide my fourth graders through the process of solving a division problem using partial quotients on an open array. It provides a visual support and walks them through each step to help familiarize themselves with the process. In addition, it highlights the connection between division and multiplication using a familiar strategy, the open array. Though this lesson focuses on divided a three-digit number by a one-digit number, once students are comfortable, it can easily be applied to dividing by two-digit numbers.
In addition, this is the perfect resource to distribute to grown ups who are confused by strategies used for teaching math!
