Stereotypes: Introducing the Theme for ANY Story
Interactive Notebook - Common Core Aligned

This is a creative way to introduce the dangers of stereotyping. Use it with any story or novel that addresses the theme, or use it alone as an introduction to a meaningful discussion on stereotypes, biases, prejudice, and racism.

The activity is broken into four parts:
1. a hands-on group (or individual) creative activity & presentation
2. introduction and exploration of stereotypes in our own lives
3. finding examples of stereotyping in the text
4. follow-up writing reflection

The lesson learned is to "put yourself in their shoes," and works well with novels such as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Outsiders, The Help, The Joy Luck Club, Wonder, Things Fall Apart, The Book Thief, The Secret Life of Bees, The Color Purple, The Kite Runner, Number the Stars, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Black Like Me, Push, Native Son, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Beloved, Go Tell It on the Mountain, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Sounder, A Passage to India, The Metamorphoses, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Othello, Farewell to Manzanar, Among the Hidden, The Diary of Anne Frank, and so many more!
