Students will analyze and reflect upon stereotypes in children's books during a sociology socialization unit. They will begin by watching and responding to a TedTalk that asks them to consider racial and gender stereotyping. Then they will read and discuss two children’s books, looking for evidence of stereotypes. Finally, they will consider whether they believe these stereotypes are harmful to children.
You will need to collect enough children’s books for your students to complete this activity in pairs. I am always on the lookout for good ones at second hand shops.
