If you use Investigations, there are several "Sticker Store" lessons. But this can definitely be used with or without investigations.
These activities address the common core standards of adding using place value and using number names (fifty-seven). You would need to teach a lesson involving number names and create a chart so kids are familiar with them prior to using the 2nd activity. We played a memory game where they match numbers to number names.
Students work on adding tens and ones together and use knowledge of place value to help them.
Example from first activity:
____________ has 25 butterfly stickers. She went to the sticker store and bought 3 more strips of butterfly stickers. How many butterfly stickers does she have now?
____________ went to the sticker store and bought 5 strips of ten star stickers and 1 single star stickers. He also bought 3 strips of ten moon stickers and 8 single star stickers. How many stickers did he buy?
Example from 2nd activity (problems with number names instead of numbers)
____________ went to the sticker store and bought thirty-two dog stickers. He gave ten dog stickers to his mom and ten dog stickers to his friend. How many dog stickers does he have left?
**The blanks are there so you can write names of your students. It helps the problems become more relevant to your class and motivates them to want to solve them!
**This activity is also differentiated for your learners. There are 3 different levels of sheets for each activity.
