Do your students ever have a hard time discerning whether the numbers they read in a story problem are the two parts or are they one part and the whole? I've had students who just automatically try to add the numbers they see together without realizing that sometimes one of the numbers is actually the "whole" in the story.
I created this small group activity to help students learn how to determine what the numbers they see in a word problem actually represent. They can model the problem by adding details from the story to the stickmen manipulatives with dry erase markers. Then we use the number bond template to show which numbers are the parts and which one is the whole. Includes 12 story problems (6 regular addition and 6 missing addend problems), number bond template, and stickmen manipulatives.
