Would you like to have your students do a "close reading" of a text, without marking it up? Then have them demonstrate they are closely reading a text using sticky notes!
This product is a four-point rubric designed for assessing sticky notes generated during a close reading of any text/excerpt.
When presented before the activity, this rubric can guide students on what it means to read a text excerpt closely. It would have students focus and take notes on important vocabulary and proper nouns as they read. It also explicitly requires students to write text-based questions and inferences. Ultimately, you can assess your students' use of "close reading" strategies with this rubric.
