Ideas for Using Reading Comprehension Sticky Note Bookmarks:
1. Introduce bookmarks as you teach skills. Each bookmark has a title and/or instructions, labels, and helpful hints and tips inside each sticky note section. This layout will help students know what to expect for each assignment.
2. Students may use the bookmarks during independent reading time. Afterwards, they may share responses with a partner, small or whole group. Consider adding the student data page (copied front to back, several copies) to individual student data binders. This way students may collect the responses that are not collected and assessed by the teacher. This encourages students to reflect on their responses and track their progress.
3. Provide bookmarks to students who may not think deeply during reading. Writing a short response makes readers more accountable. Collect their responses on the teacher data sheet to track progress and write anecdotal notes.
4. Use bookmarks during guided reading instruction. As students read, they write responses on sticky notes, then share with the small group and/or teacher. Collect sticky note responses and add them to each student’s page of the class data binder, which contains a data page (back and front, at least a couple of pages) for each student. Fill in the date, text, topic/skill, and write anecdotal notes for each student.
5. Provide bookmarks and sticky notes to students who may need additional support at home. The bookmarks are also a simple, effective way for parents to help their children with reading skills.
