This lesson will have students read the poem "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou, perform quick-writes in preparation for Socratic Seminars, identify and analyze figurative language in the poem, and analyze its purpose. Students will then compare the poem (particularly the theme) to the song by Lauren Hill, "The Miseducation of Lauren Hill." The students will again do several close reads of the song, quick-writes, Socratic Seminar, and analyze the theme. As a final assessment, students will write an informative/explanatory essay. Included with this plan is my powerpoint about conducting a Socratic Seminar.
