Reading groups should be fun!!! I create activities to help my students not only comprehend what they read but also to enjoy and understand the book in different ways. In Megan McDonald's wonderful , Stink takes care of a newt and completes a report on James Madison. The activities I include explore the red-spotted newt and favorite presidents. My goal for you is to make reading fun for you as a teacher as well as your students.
I also offer a Teacher Discussion Guide that includes: 1) Questions to help you lead a group discussion; 2) Vocabulary words or possible story element graphic organizers to do that pertain to a chapter; 3) "On your own" higher level questions for students to create short constructed responses.
Chapter Quizzes: I assign a quiz once the reading group has read the chapter, we have had a group discussion, and each student has answered a high level question about the chapter. I use the chapter quiz to make sure students are comprehending what they read. My students are allowed to use the book during the quiz. I want them to go back and find the answer in the book. They are required to write the page number on the line to the right of the question. (You could also have students fill out the quiz as they read the chapter.)
Activities: My students look forward to “Reading Project Fridays”! On Fridays, students work on projects that go along with their books. I allow lots of individual creativity!!! Students define what this activity ends up being! Each group puts their own unique twist to an activity. If students want to make posters, Google Slides, dioramas, mobiles, or any other artsy project; I let them. I don’t assign every project. I pick and choose depending on the students’ interests within a group.
Have fun & enjoy reading groups!!!!
