To prove that this chemical reaction created a NEW substance that has NEW properties, students will test the mixture for magnetism before and after heating. *This lab requires disposable culture tubes (cheap test tubes), glass wool plugs, powdered sulfur, iron filings, magnets, ziplock baggies, and basic lab equipment. At the end of the lab, students will need to use a hammer to gently break the culture tube and remove the heated mixture to test its magnetism.
