Product Description
In this activity, students have an imaginary $10,000 to invest in the stock market. They are to select at least three different stocks to purchase and record the names, symbols, exchanges, and current prices per share of each stock. They must determine the number of shares of each stock to buy without exceeding $10,000. Internet access is needed to research stocks and to find current prices.

After recording their initial information there are two additional tables (more copies could also be made) for students to come back to at a later date to check and record their stock prices. The frequency of checking prices and the period of time between checking prices is up to the teacher. I initially use this activity near the beginning of the school year when I teach an economics unit. I collect and hold on to the students' papers. If I have time I need to fill later in the year I'll have students check their stock prices.

A five question worksheet that can be used at the end of the activity. The questions include:
1. Overall, did the total value of your stock portfolio go up or down?
2. What was the best performing stock in your portfolio? Why do you think this stock performed better than the others?
3. What was the worst performing stock in your portfolio? Why do you think that stock did not perform as well as the others?
4. How did the changes in the total value of your stocks compare to the changes in the Dow Jones Industrial Average? If the Dow Average went up, did your stock prices also go up? If the Dow Average went down, did your stock prices also go down? Or were your results mixed?
5. If you had (real) money to invest, would you invest in the stock market or would you choose another form of investment? Explain why you would or would not invest in the stock market.
