This is a GREAT activity for Economics teachers or anyone that wants to get students more excited about investing.
My kids love it, and many of them go on to create their own real-life portfolios and ask me for advice on their stocks after class.
The best part of this project for the teacher is that you are engaging them in a higher-level-thinking activity, you are getting them to willingly do math during class time, and you teach them an important skill.
To kick off the activity, I recommend that you play the game "The Capitalville" on the iPad with your students to get them more excited about it. We also use the app "StockTouch" which allows them to do research on hundreds of stocks in a visual and easily attainable manner. If you buy this product, you can e-mail me for more advice on how to roll this out with your students and I'll assist you in getting it going. This is truly a wonderful unit that I give them a little time for in class each week for the 11 weeks of the simulation. It helps combat the dreaded "Senioritis" and makes them eager to study the core content after they see the free market working.
You'll love this!
