Use fireplace mats and stockings with words
Tell the student that they are going to get to hang stocking by the chimney.
Give each student a chimney mat.
Place the cut out stockings in a box or a little sack.
The student rolls the dice and chooses the number of stockings indicated on the dice. The stockings are placed on the fireplace.
Option 1-- the pictures on the stockings are named imitatively or spontaneously.
Option 2--The word on the first stocking is repeated once, the second word twice, the third word three times, etc.
The next student repeats the activity.
When each student has had a turn, place all the stockings back in the box or sack, have the students pick a new fireplace mat, and repeat the activity.
Make two copies of each fireplace mat, two copies of the blank stockings (slide 11), and the clue cards (slide 10) .
Each student gets a mat, a set of stockings and a clue card. A barrier is placed between the students so that they are unable to see each others mat.
One student places stockings on his/her fireplace in any order s/he chooses. That student uses descriptive words on their clue cards to tell the other student how to arrange the stockings on their fireplace mat. For example, “First put the red stocking with a penguin in it on the left side of the fireplace; Put the green stocking with the red toe next to the red and green striped stocking.
Students label/name the objects on the stockings, and tell what can be done with it.
Use fireplace mats and two sets of the stocking cards with pictures and words.
Place stockings on a fireplace mat. The student matches the stocking cards to the ones on the fireplace or on a matching fireplace mat.
