I originally created this novel study so my on-level students could
read the book “Stone Fox” in small group and reflect on their reading
while practicing common core ELA skills. For each chapter students
answer common core standards based questions in the Reading
Literature strands and Language strands. Other questions also include
Reading Foundational skills, Writing skills, and Speaking and Listening skills.
I currently teach my grade level’s tier II MTSS groups. We have a
district purchased reading intervention curriculum, which has various
comprehension and fluency resources. However, after MONTHS of doing the same activities, the kids are ready to mix it up, and so am I! So, I wanted to modify my original Stone Fox novel study to utilize with my tier II third grade students. Most of these students are reading in the “strategic intervention” category as measured by the DIBELS Next progress monitoring data. Two of my main focuses with my tier II kiddos are reading comprehension and reading fluency. We work on different areas of reading prosody, including speed, accuracy, and expression.
I geared these activities toward 2nd-4th grade students, depending
on your level of readers. This novel study could easily be used with on-level or enrichment 2nd grade readers, on-level or tier II 3rd graders, or tier II and tier III fourth graders. You can certainly pick and choose which activities are most appropriate for your students! Stone Fox is a great novel for 2-4 grade students. Since it is historical fiction based on a legend, it provides many opportunities for students to learn about a different time period with characters and vocabulary terms with which they may not be familiar. This can lead to many teachable moments in social studies contents as well as reading literature.
