Product Description
This is a set of 40 Comprehension cards to use with any narrative text. These cards are a very versatile resource. You may choose to use the whole set of cards, or, if you are working on a particular skill, you can use just those cards.
The cards are meant to aid in reading comprehension by asking students to stop, think and respond to the directions on the cards. Skills included are:

• Character
• Climax
• Conflict
• Theme
• Fact and Opinion
• Vocabulary
• Figurative Language
• Summarizing
• Author’s Purpose
• Author’s Craft
• Prediction
• Point of View
• Compare/Contrast
• Questioning
• Making Connections
• Main Idea


Here are some ways I have used these cards successfully in my own classroom.
1. Small group – with or without a teacher. Students read a portion of text, then draw a card. The student reads the card aloud and then follows the directions on the card. This leads to a group discussion many times.

2. Partner Read – Same as above, only with partners.

3. Independent Reading or Literacy Center – When students are assigned to read a portion of text independently, you can hand out as many cards to a student as you like. Have students respond in their Reading Response Journal.

4. Literature Circles – Students have already read the text independently. The cards help the group discuss the reading. I've included a directions page you can print for students if you choose to use them as a center.

5. Whole Class – As you read a book as a class, stop occasionally and draw a card. Choose a student to respond. (I like to use an online random name picker, this keeps students engaged as they might be next!)

6. Read Aloud – I love reading aloud to my class. Using the cards brings up the level of engagement. I will occasionally stop, draw a card and choose a student to respond.
