Stop and Jot is a great resource for building students' independence when reading and thinking critically. This resource includes sentence starters to support and challenge students as they read and discuss or respond to a text.
Here are a few ideas to use this resource:
-Literacy Centers: Students can read a few pages or chapters, choose one or more sentence starters to respond to on a sticky note on the page they are referring to. -Think/Pair/Share: Students can read a few pages or chapters, think about their response to one or more of the sentence starters, share with a partner, and then discuss whole class.
-Daily Reminder: Print this at Kinkos or another printing company to hang as an anchor chart (and you can reuse every year!). You can also print out the smaller cards and post them on your students' desks or tape them to the top of pencils.
