When I am giving a long period of time in class to silent read, sometimes I do not have time to conference individually with all of my students. This strategy allows me to see if they are comprehending literary concepts and their characters, plot, conflict, setting in their books. I can look them over after class and see who is struggling, and who is getting it. I have multiple boards, some have more structure, some have more choices as to what to write about. Sometimes I print them double sided and allow a choice. Kids typically like this strategy as it does give them freedom to choose.
