This is a "cool" close reading lesson that teens will enjoy because of its modern music connection and plenty of opportunity for authentic discussion and collaboration. Its ultimate goal is for students to be able to delineate symbolism and how theme develops and how two different texts can share the same theme. With the classic text and modern song as the two texts, students will be able to make connections and see relevancy to their world as well.
This is the perfect lesson for teaching thematic development across texts for CCSS Anchor R.9! It is also an excellent model for teaching close reading of poetry to bridge into a poetry analysis literary writing task.
