This lesson explores the use of Pan Pastels. This media is a dust free alternative to chalk pastels.
Throughout time artists have used objects that are important in their lives, cultural traditions and artistic heritages to create works of art. A pleasing composition of objects that surrounded artists everyday lives were now used as a way to practice their observational drawing skills in addition to a self-portrait, and a message or story that in later years would be used to intrigue and discover who these artists were and what they saw through their eyes.
In this lesson elementary students will be divided into groups of 4-5 students and together will arrange a successful composition of objects that have personal meaning in their lives. Each student will be responsible for bringing in one object from home that has personal meaning or connections to people, places or events that have happened in their lives. These objects must all be placed together in their group still life. Students will be given a viewfinder to use as a tool to guide them through the process of arrangement. They will set up a still life with their objects to tell a story about who they are as individuals.
