These engaging activities were designed to enhance any Reading lesson, but are centered around character, setting, and plot. Your students will have fun while learning. You will have fun along with your students.
Story Mix Up Activity:
This is similar to the game Mad Libs, but the students are in charge of creating the story, replacing key words, and retelling. It can be used as a partner game, small group, or whole group activity.
In this activity, students remove the existing setting of a book and create a new one. Students retell the story and discuss how the setting can influence other parts of a story.
Students give character traits to existing pictures of characters and create characters from scratch.
In this activity, students switch the settings from a favorite book with a movie.
In this activity, students randomly choose 3 character cards, a setting (time) card, a setting (place) card, and a problem. After choosing their cards, they begin to piece together a story with a beginning, middle and end, based on those pieces.
Blank card templates are included to encourage more creativity and to make it more relevant for your students.
Question cards can be used as posters on the wall to remind the teacher and the student to use higher level questioning. They can also be used in small group or whole group discussions based on your current book series to increase rigor.
