This is a simple yet fun activity that focuses on story elements of character, setting and plot. It includes 96 cards (32 character, 32 setting, and 32 plot cards) and a recording sheet.

Students may work individually or in pairs. They should select two character cards, one setting card, and one plot card. Using their recording sheets they should write a short story that combines the characters, setting and plot cards that they selected.
I usually have my students complete this activity as a literacy center, but it can be completed during small or whole group time. My students love the opportunity to share their stories with their classmates.
I suggest printing the student direction page in color (It does look fine printed in grayscale.), laminating it and attaching it to the front of a 9x12 envelope. Print the cards in color or in grayscale on color cardstock, laminate, and cut for student use. Place the cards in a Ziploc bag and keep them and the recording sheets inside the 9x12 envelope.
