This product includes project directions and a rubric for a group project or a home project. The students will create a Story Map Poster analyzing the major Story Elements (main character, supporting characters, setting, problem/solution, sequence of events, theme and figurative language). For each component the students will need to provide text evidence, an explanation in their own words and an illustration.
This project really gets students excited about reading because they have the opportunity to discuss the book with other students. I have many class sets of novels and I am currently teaching the project where all the groups are analyzing the same book. However, this could be used during literature circles where groups of students are analyzing novels at their reading level. I also adapted the project so that it can be used as a home project to demonstrate comprehension of the book they are reading independently.
For most novels, this project will take about a month to complete. I pace out the novel so that students read a few chapters (depending on length) each day and then work on the poster. As a home project, I encourage the students to create their own schedule so they are balancing reading with completing the poster. I recommend giving the students four to six weeks to complete the home project.
