This is our summative project for an IB unit "How we express ourselves" on storytelling. We explore several types of storytelling and then students create and plan their own stories. This resource includes a letter home to parents explaining the project, a project checklist for students to check off as they go, a "to-do" list for students to plan the work they need to do at school, and then a booklet that goes through basic story elements (characters, plot, problem and solution, setting) for students to plan and create a rough draft for an original story. I send this home for homework (usually over winter or spring break so they have a good chunk of time) and then have them bring their planners back into school so we can create the final projects in class together. Some of this final drafting can be done as a literacy centre with more teacher support and review. I've used this for a few years and tinkered with it each year. It's always been a great tool for the kids to make some impressive stories!
