Common Core Standards require students to know how to solve many different types of word problems. This 15 page set is aligned with Common Core State Standards to teach Compare - Difference Unknown: How many fewer? Numbers to 10 . In my experience, students learn how to better solve each story problem type when first taught in isolation. Later, students will know when and how to solve each addition and subtraction situation.

In compare - difference unknown story problems, students compare how many fewer by using subtraction or missing addend.

Example: Jill has 9 lemons. Sam has 7 lemons. How many fewer lemons does Sam have than Jill?

Students will find how many fewer lemons Sam has than Jill.

9 - 7 = 2 OR 7 + ____ = 9

Students will solve by drawing a picture, using a number line, shading blocks to compare amount (best visual for students), writing an equation, and filling in the answer in sentence form.
