Product Description

Common Core Standards require students to know how to solve many different types of word problems. This 15 page set is aligned with Common Core State Standards to teach Compare - Bigger Unknown (more) Numbers to 20 . In my experience, students learn how to better solve each story problem type when first taught in isolation. Later, students will know when and how to solve each addition and subtraction situation.

There are 2 versions in this packet. (questions are the same, just change of word order) In version one, the known is given first. In version two, how many more is given first. This will allow students to practice how to solve regardless of the wording of the story problem.

In compare - bigger unknown story problems, students add to find the total by looking at how many more.

Example (version 1): Jill has 12 lemons. Sam has 5 more lemons than Jill. How many lemons does Sam have?

12 + 5 = 17 or 5 + 12 = 17

OR

Example (version 2): Sam has 5 more lemons than Jill. Jill has 12 lemons. How many lemons does Sam have?

5 + 12 = 17 or 12 + 5 = 17

Students will solve by drawing a picture, using a number line, writing an equation, and filling in the answer in sentence form.
