Story Problems to Begin the New Year is a collection of multi-step word problems to use at the beginning of the year. January problems have a snow theme. February problems include Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, President's Day, and the Superbowl as story ideas. In March, there are Easter egg and Easter basket problems.
All sheets include multi-step problems that require students to think about the math, and to use a variety of math skills including work with fractions, temperature, measurement, and all operations.
Most questions ask students to include an equation and to show work in pictures and words.
Sheets are intended to be fun, easily used in small groups to encourage cooperative learning and discussion of the math skills. Each sheet is decorated with clip art from My Cute Graphics.com to add interest to the work. I usually print one copy in color to put under the document camera.
My students often skip the reading of the problems and just try to pull out the numbers and solve. These problems are written to encourage reading and understanding the questions in order for a student to be successful in solving.
The problems focus on fifth grade math skills.
Sheets can be copied as a worksheet, or one problem at a time could be displayed on the document camera as a fun, challenging bell ringer.
